Choose the right tool for the job, from exploring complex ideas with natural language to building broad market maps with tags.
Choosing the right search tool
Your starting point for discovery should be choosing the right qualitative search tool. Each is designed for a different purpose.
For Complex Ideas, use AI Search
AI Search is best when you have a complex, nuanced, or hard-to-define idea that you can express in a natural language sentence
Best for: Testing a complex investment thesis (e.g., "businesses developing drugs similar to Ozempic"), finding companies based on qualitative concepts, or when you're not sure which specific keywords to use
How it works: Your query is passed to an LLM, which finds initial matches. We then expand that list using our similar company algorithm and text search, before using the LLM again to screen for only the most relevant results. Each result comes with a "Motivation" column explaining why it was included
Best Practice: Use AI Search for your initial qualitative search. Then, apply hard quantitative filters (like Revenue, EBITDA, or HQ location) afterwards to refine your results
For broad discovery, use Tags
The Tags filter is your most powerful tool when you have a good idea of the business activities, products, or sectors you're interested in and want to build a broad list.
Best for: Building a view of companies in a known niche (e.g., "food delivery" or "cybersecurity") and expanding or narrowing with exact terms
How it works: Start typing a keyword, and the system will suggest related tags. You can then combine them using powerful logic:
- OR (Default): Widens your search to include companies with any of the selected tags
- AND: Narrows your search to only include companies with all of the selected tags
- EXCLUDE: Refines your search by removing companies with specific tags
For specific keywords, use Text Contains
The Text Contains filter is best when you need to find a specific word or phrase within a company's profile, including its business description or LinkedIn "About Us" page. It uses semantic search to understand your intent.
Best for: Finding companies that mention a specific technology, standard, or keyword that might not be a formal tag
How it works: The search understands the meaning behind your query, not just the exact keywords. For example, searching for "solar panel manufacturing" will also find a company described as a "solar panel manufacturer"
Best Practice:
- Use quotes (e.g., "solar panel manufacturing") to enforce the exact word order in your results
- Use Boolean logic for complex queries:
ANDto combine terms,ORto expand, and a dash (-) to exclude terms
